Budowa materii w „Meteorach” Kartezjusza

Autor

Abstrakt

This paper aims to introduce “The Meteors”, one of the three essays, along with “The Dioptrics and The Geometry”, appended by Descartes to the edition of the “Discourse on the Method” in 1637. It presents shared features rather than a detailed analysis of successive ‘meteorological’ phenomena. The philosopher addresses the issue in Discourse One, On the „Nature of Earthly Bodies”, designed to introduce the entire essay, then also in Discourse Two, dedicated to the phenomena of vapors and fumes. The word ‘meteors’, associated today with astronomy, in the 17th c., referred to phenomena in the sublunar world, with an obvious connection to Aristotle’s tradition. Starting from phenomena between the Moon and the Earth, the essay portrays meteorological phenomena such as winds, thunderstorms, lightning, rain, snowfall, and rainbows. We analyze the issues presented in these two discourses: the molecular structure of matter, subtle matter, vapor, and fumes, and show that Descarte’s hypothesis of the molecular structure of matter differs significantly from the ancient atomism.
