Correspondence between Johannes Hevelius, Elias de Leonibus and Maria Cunitia
Abstract
The collection of preserved correspondence of Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687) with Elias de Leonibus (1602-1661) and Maria Cunitia (1610-1664) consists of 23 letters written over six years, between 28 February 1648 and 10 April 1654. Their authors discuss their publications, “Selenographia” by Hevelius and “Urania Propitia” by Cunitia, telescope accuracy, current astronomical observations and Maria Cunitia’s scientific fame. The article examines the contents of the letters, focusing on differences between those penned by de Leonibus and those by Cunitia, and the relationship between the correspondents.
