Abstract

Ductile iron is a highly versatile engineering material that offers an exceptional combination of strength, ductility, castability, and cost efficiency, making it a promising solution for a wide range of modern applications. This paper presents a concise review of advanced ductile iron grades, focusing on the relationships between microstructure and mechanical properties.

The analysis is based on a multiscale perspective, in which solidification processes, graphite quality, and matrix transformation are considered as intrinsically coupled phenomena governing material performance. Particular attention is given to the role of graphite morphology and distribution, as well as to the influence of solidification-induced heterogeneity on the formation of the metallic matrix.

It is shown that advanced ductile irons, including pearlitic ductile iron, ADI, IDI, Si-Mo, and Ni-Resist grades can be consistently interpreted within this framework, demonstrating their broad applicability and future potential as high-performance structural materials.
