Prestige Distribution. State Enterprise “Desa” – Works Of Art and Antiques (1950–1991)

Abstract

This article focuses on the state-owned enterprise “Desa” – Works of Art and Antiques, which held a monopoly on the trade of art and antiques during the Polish People’s Republic. The author analyzes the circumstances of its establishment, its transformations, development, and social reception over its 40-year existence. The central thesis posits that despite ostensibly conducting neutral commercial activities, “Desa” was a political project that implemented the official state policy in the realm of art trade and the protection of cultural heritage. Simultaneously, its unique offerings and social exclusivity transformed it into a space for the distribution of prestige.
