Abstract

The contribution concentrates on the kinship terminology in Beja, the only representative of the North Cushitic branch of Afroasiatic languages. The first aim is a summarisation of all relevant lexical data including all dialects and from all available authors which recorded them. The second aim is the internal analysis of the studied lexemes from the point of view of word-formation. The third aim focuses on the etymological analysis, discussing their origin in both perspectives, areal and genealogical. The latter perspective concerns the cognates identified in Cushitic languages and more widely in other Afroasiatic branches.
