Abstract

Engaging in sociological theory today increasingly means not so much striving to create new theoretical propositions as metatheoretical reflection on existing theories. While this situation has its advantages, it also fosters a persistent belief in the ongoing crisis of sociological theory and encourages the search for alternative narratives. Some of these narratives are openly antithetical, including common-sense thinking. This article attempts to answer two questions: firstly, the question of the dimensions in which sociological theory is confronted today with common sense, and secondly, to address the question of possible ways in which sociological theory might respond to competing common-sense descriptions, interpretations, and explanations.
