History

Folia Orientalia is one of the oldest international journals devoted to Asian and African Studies in Central Europe. It was founded in 1959 by the distinguished Polish Arabist Tadeusz Lewicki, who recognised the need for a scholarly periodical dedicated to the study of Asia and Africa in the broadest sense.

Over more than six decades, the journal has published contributions by scholars from around the world and has established itself as an international forum for research across the disciplines of Asian and African Studies.

Throughout its history, Folia Orientalia has been shaped by successive generations of distinguished scholars. The editorial leadership has included Tadeusz Lewicki, Franciszek Machalski, Stanisław Stachowski, Andrzej Zaborski and Tomasz Polański, each of whom contributed to the journal's scholarly profile and international reputation.

Since 2022, the Editors-in-Chief have been Maciej Klimiuk (Freie Universität Berlin; Heidelberg University, Germany) and Arkadiusz Płonka (Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland).

Folia Orientalia is published annually by the Commission of Oriental Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Kraków Branch) and continues to welcome submissions from scholars worldwide.
